How to Treat ECZEMA

What is Eczema?

Photo of eczema skinEczema or dermatitis, refers to a skin rash that is very itchy, irritating and the more severe forms can cause extreme pain and due to scratching of the skin, can lead to skin infection. In the more recent times, the number of children diagnosed with Eczema has risen to around 15-20% and in adults this is around 2-4% of the population.

According to Eczema Association of Australia, Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a recurring, non-infectious, inflammatory skin condition affecting one in three Australasians at some stage throughout their lives. The condition is most common in people with a family history of an atopic disorder, including asthma or hay fever. Eczema is also classed as an autoimmune disorder and as such, the overactive immune system is the underlying problem in these conditions.

The causes of eczema are varied, but there is now a consensus that eczema is a form of autoimmunity and once the immune response has been activated, this would generally lead to a flare up in those suffering from Eczema.

  • Types of Eczema

There are many types of eczema and some of them are listed below:

  • Atopic Eczema
  • Allergic Contact Dermatitis
  • Infantile and Adult Seborrhoeic Eczema
  • Discoid Eczema
  • Irritant Contact Dermatitis

This list is not complete but gives an overview of the types of eczema. You should consult your health care professional for your specific condition.

  • Treatment of Eczema

  • There is a very large list of drugs for the treatment of Eczema. This list includes steroids and corticosteroids. As with all medicines, all these products have side effects. Eczema is considered to be an autoimmune condition and currently there are no cures for eczema, however there are a number of treatments used to manage Eczema.

  • Topical Steroidal creams and Ointments
  • Oral Corticosteroids
  • Injectable Corticosteroids
  • Antihistamines
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
  • Other drugs that Reduce the capability of the immune response

Unfortunately all of these products have side effects. Regular use of steroidal products often leads to the patient becoming sensitised to the drug and higher doses are required. Furthermore, long-term use of steroidal products often leads to a dependency on the drug and if the patient stops using the drug, it will lead to the syndrome referred to as steroid withdrawal.

Steroid withdrawal can often be more stressful on the patients than the eczema itself and the combination of steroid withdrawal and eczema flare up will often lead to hospitalisation.
